“Facades have started to make an appearance 2017 and dark colours are extremely popular.” Gemma Doran SAM Mouldings

How did you get into your area of work?

I was introduced to SAM in 2015.  I love the company ethos and the real family feel at SAM.  I travel all around Ireland and the UK meeting and speaking to people who specify or use SAM products.

What's the favourite part of your job?

The entire process! I enjoy seeing the vision of a client being brought to fruition by SAM’s amazing products.  I get the pleasure of being involved at the early stages with the architect and follow the project through to completion, working in alliance with our highly-skilled joiners onsite.

What's hot this year?

The juxtaposition of different design styles and textures.  People still want contemporary design, but combining warmth and character too; Architecture that is stylish yet functional.  SAM Trimax, our extremely durable fibreboard range has become a product of choice for an array of projects here in Northern Ireland, in the UK and across Europe.  It offers clients the rustic feel of a timber-based product, but with minimal maintenance and a product warranty of  50 years – perfect!

Facades have also started to make an appearance on many of our projects and we see this trend continuing to surge in 2017.  Dark colours are extremely popular.  The use of black and grey really highlight the overall shape of the project, while enhancing features such as the windows.  With SAM Trimax, you can have your pick of any RAL colour, the hard part is choosing one!

What's the top tip you give to clients?

Be creative.  At SAM, we pride ourselves on being bespoke.  With architecture, there is no “one size fits all,” so we are always open to new ideas and offering a solution.

What' the favourite project you've been involved in this year?

We are currently working on a self-build project in Portstewart.  The client wanted to create depth and texture to the exterior of their home. However, given its coastal location, subjected to harsh conditions such as high levels of atmospheric moisture and salt, combined with wind loading, the client needed a product that could stand up to the challenge.

SAM Trimax provided them with a solution.  It gave the client the opportunity to substitute less sustainable materials for the benefits of wood-based panel.  In fact, the client loved the product so much, they removed their PVC fascia and soffit and had Trimax installed too.

What country do you think is topping the trend in terms of innovation and design?

The Netherlands are topping the trend.  Their open mentality to look at and consider new products and concepts sets them apart.  They are leaders in using innovative, high quality products.  They were the first to use compact grade material and it is their base product.  They really look at what the customer wants and offer accordingly.
